OPEN BURN PERMITTING 2026

Burn Permit Request
**Permit Required - New for 2026** Note: There is no cost for a permit.
*Open Burn Permits will be available until October 30th or when conditions necessitate closing, whichever comes first.
Open Burning - With Permit
Open burning of clippings, bushes, plants and prunings from trees incident to property clean-up activities, including residential cleanup.
Open Burn Permits will be available Oct. 1st until Oct. 31st or when conditions necessitate closing, whichever comes first.
There are two ways to complete the open burn permit application:
  1. Online – Follow the link to the Burn Permit Request Form. Completing this form online is the easiest and fastest way to complete the open burn permit application. An electronic copy of the application is automatically submitted to the fire department upon completion.
  2. Phone – An applicant can call the DAQ at (801) 536-4000 and complete the open burn permit application process over the phone. A DAQ inspector will ask the applicant for the required information and complete the application in just a few minutes.
 
Exception to permit
Open Burning - Without Permit.
The following types of open burning do not require a permit when not prohibited by other local, state or federal laws and regulations, when it does not create a nuisance, and does not impact the health and welfare of the public.
(1)  Devices for the primary purpose of preparing food such as outdoor grills and fireplaces;
(2)  Campfires and fires used solely for recreational purposes where such fires are under control of a responsible person and the combustible material is clean, dry wood or charcoal;
* At any time, the fire becomes a nuisance to your neighbors the responsible party may be
asked to extinguish the fire. The fire department also has authority to extinguish any fire
that creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation. If the fire results in an out-of-
control fire, the responsible party will be charged for all suppression costs and for the
losses associated from said fire. and
(3)  Indoor fireplaces and residential solid fuel burning devices.
